When new college graduates ask me for advice, my first piece of advice is always "get a mentor". Whether they choose to hire me as a professional career coach, participate in an employer sponsored mentoring program, or develop an organic relationship with someone who understands how careers work, this is the single most important step they can take to developing upwards mobility faster than their counterparts.
Working with someone who truly grasps corporate culture, management, and core business principles can often improve how one approaches work routines, interaction with coworkers and career planning. See, a career, just like a report or a project, requires planning and must be approached very intentionally.
Obviously, this planning process doesn't stop. By the time you are a senior individual contributor or a junior manager, you should have accumulated 2-3 mentors to make decisions with, bounce ideas off of, and who can guide you towards refinement of your career plan. If you did find a mentor early, by the time you become a mid-level manager, you should be able to mentor others and begins the cycle anew.
Professional career coaches, mentors and personal coaches are sometimes versatile and sometimes specialized. They have honed their craft, and in many cases, built tools and systems or have training specific to mentoring. If you go this path, ask for references, research them on the web or see how many time the word 'mentor' shows up on their linked in page.
Whether you decide to hire a mentor, ask a colleague, or find one organically, whether it is a manger from another department or a successful Uncle - maintaining a relationship with a mentor is a key tool in developing your career.
