  • 26 Mar, 2018

Up to 1 in 4 Americans suffer from Postpartum Depression.  It usually presents itself within the first few weeks of having a baby (but can develop at any time in the first 6 months after giving birth).

Symptoms

1.       Inability to concentrate and think clearly with bouts of forgetfulness

2.       Anxiety of self-worth

3.       Severe mood swings

4.       Excessive crying

5.       Becoming withdrawn from friends and family

6.       Not bonding with the baby

7.       Fatigue, weight loss, and lack of appetite

8.       Severe long-lasting bouts of depression

9.       Thoughts of self-harm and suicide

10.     Thoughts of harming the baby

It is common to feel anxious after giving birth and even having short periods where a new mother is depressed.  But if the symptoms last longer than these common short bouts – it is imperative to seek help.  If you or someone you know is a danger to yourself or others then please call 911 immediately to get the help needed.
